Western Carolina Optical has been in business for over 30 years and was started by Buddy Tate and a key group of optical professionals. In 1999, Gerry and Debbie Shaw purchased the business from Mr. Tate and continued to focus on excellence in quality craftsmanship and customer care. Debbie was homeschooling their children at the time, so Gerry took on the task of learning a new industry after 17 years in electrical manufacturing. Debbie joined ranks in managing WCO with Gerry after teaching in a local school, and the couple has grown the business, invested in new machinery, software, and support systems that allow our wonderful staff to bring the latest lens technology to the optical community.
Trends in the marketplace led Gerry to initiate a partnership with other small laboratories to form Nexus Vision Group, which allows the group to invest in capital intensive technology and grow in a competitive and changing market. The Nexus Vision Group LLC, located in Columbus, Ohio began in 2004 with a focus on providing AR coatings and has grown to offer the latest technology in digital lenses to the market. As a growing enterprise with an amazing network of independent laboratories, Nexus as a group processes over 700 pairs of prescription lenses per day and over 500 pairs of AR coatings. Gerry has served as the Managing Partner since 2006.
Over the past few years, WCO has processed thousands of optical Rx prescriptions using some of the latest lens, material and coatings. This includes their own premium house brands of anti-reflective coatings (Carbonite, NVision Plus, and Vision) and digital progressives (Proprius DS/DH, Proprius HD, Provectus, and the Professional). In addition, WCO distributes products from some of the industry’s top companies – Shamir, Hoya, Younger and Vision Ease. WCO is a small company with big services that can provide high quality, individual craftsmanship combined with excellent service at an exceptional value.
